Back to the Desert!

2021

We have returned to Doha again this week and, to give you a bit of insight into life on Tour…getting this tournament back on the schedule has definitely been one of the toughest so far for the European Tour! The Qatar borders have been closed to international travellers ever since the pandemic first started back in March last year which means that we’ve all had to apply for a multitude of special exemption visas to even get access into the country. On top of that we were then required to take COVID tests at the airport as soon as we got off the plane and quarantine in our hotel rooms until the results came back 24 hours later! Obviously travelling everywhere at the moment is more complicated than it used to be…but when there are still such strict national restrictions in place such as those we face this week – it really highlights how much effort the Qatar Golf Association and European Tour have had to go through to get these events running for us again, and we are very grateful for those opportunities in return!

Once again we are playing at Education City Golf Club this year which is a couple of miles further inland than the previous venue for this event (Doha Golf Club). It’s another exposed desert layout but slightly more parkland in style with larger areas of surrounding green landscape. The course itself is relatively wide and open with generous fairways and large greens. Whilst power off the tee will still give us an advantage, most of the pressure this week will come from a strong short game and hot putter.
As a matter of fact, the weather forecast is quite different to our last outing here with winds expected to pick up as each day passes and potentially gusts of up to 30mph at the weekend! With that in mind, it will be another event to focus on producing strong recovery shots as/when those breezes manage to get the better of us!

It’s an early start for us tomorrow as I’m off at 6.45am local time alongside Laurie Canter and George Coetzee. Should be a couple of fun first few days out there!
